1983 REUBEN LASKER
Dr. Reuben Lasker, the sixth recipient of the A.G. Huntsman Award, is being recognized for his work on the problem of determining year-class strengths and the mechanism of annual fluctuations in fish stocks. Dr. Lasker elucidated the mechanism for determining year-class strength in the California anchovy. Starting from laboratory studies on the bio-energetics of clupeid larvae, associated with analysis of the larval feeding behaviour studies by his co-worker John Hunter, Dr. Lasker proceeded to develop an essential tool for further progress - an ability to spawn anchovies, on demand, in the laboratory. From this point progress went rapidly through studies of predation of fish larvae to the critical experiments at sea.
